Project Overview: Building the “Worthless” with AWS Kiro
During the inaugural AWS Road to re:Invent competition, the challenge was unique: build a “worthless” app. The criteria were specific—the solution had to solve a non-existent problem (or make a real one worse), be built using the AWS Kiro Agentic IDE and CLI, utilize at least one AWS service, and be publicly accessible.
Our solution was ChewView.me, a digital homage to the famous Seattle Gum Wall.
ChewView allows users to replicate or create their own gum-based murals through a “Color (or Chew) by Numbers” model. By uploading a portrait, the app processes the image and returns a detailed execution plan for recreating that image entirely out of chewed gum.
The technical and “absurd” breakdown includes:
- The Blueprint: A pixelated color-by-numbers chart mapped to common gum colors.
- The Resource Estimate: A full breakdown of total sticks required by brand and color.
- The “Cost” Analysis: Beyond the financial price of the gum, the app calculates the total calories consumed during the process and the exact number of “chews” required to reach the proper consistency for sticking.
Built entirely during the high-speed “sprint” from LA to Vegas, ChewView.me stands as a testament to what happens when you combine elite engineering talent, Agentic AI tools, and a prompt to be as ridiculous as possible.
